A collector folder will tell you what dates and mintmarks were issued for Jefferson nickels. It takes some searching, and some will be harder to find than others. But it’s possible to find all dates and mintmarks of Jefferson nickels in circulation.

But be patient. It’s not something you’ll do over a weekend. Just check the dates and mintmarks on nickels whenever you get the chance, and one by one you’ll see the holes in your folder fill up.

Focus on Westward Journey nickels

In 2004 and 2005, the U.S. Mint issued a special series of nickels called the Westward Journey series. The nickels were issued to mark the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase and the exploration of the American West by Lewis and Clark.

The Louisiana Purchase was one of the most important acts of Jefferson’s presidency. In 1803, Jefferson paid France about $15 million for more than 800,000 square miles of land. The additional land about doubled the size of the United States.

The land included all or part of the following current states: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

In 1804, Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to head an expedition to explore some of the new land. They left from St. Louis, Mo., in the spring of 1804. They headed up the Missouri River and explored parts of present-day Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. Eventually, they went all the way west to the Pacific Ocean. They arrived there in November 1805.
